Police: Between professionalisme and effective measures

Salam,

This week is very challenging for the UK police. They have to deal with the worst riot since the last 20/30 years. I would like to share some of my views regarding what happened and how the UK police tackle it.

First, the police is very professional and it deserves much praise. The police did not use excessive force (i.e beating the rioters) when dealing with the rioters. Police brutality is something we normally sees in many countries. but professionalism is not enough to maintain peace. Police need professionalisme as well as effective measures.

First, how quick is the police react? People may argue that nobody would expect the riot to happen, so the police is very much unprepared. I think they have more than enough time to prepare. If this is the 1st day of riot, then that would be fine. But today is the 4th day since the riot started. The condition is not getting better, but worst. They act too slow. Are the police waiting for home minister and then home minister waiting for PM (PM was on holiday)? huhu. People complaints that looting were done openly for hours before the police came. Xde ke patrol car yang ronda2? Their failure to contain this problem sooner than later causes the problem to spread across the country.

Secondly is the police tactics. How they tackle the rioters and looters? The police were very much restrained (even when thrown by missiles and being provocked). They just watched rioters vandalising and burning cars. When the situation becomes worst, the police started to chase the looters. Then, the looters ran. After few minutes, the looters came back and continue stealing. Then, the police chase them again. No arrest were made. There are significant number of police presence but the full force were not there. The situation is like cat and mouse. The government also refused to use water cannon and rubber bullets.

Only after the 4th-day, when the riot and looting spread to major cities, the police becomes a little bit aggressive. They started to use baton and dogs to arrest rioters. They also posted pictures of suspects on the net, searched (at home) and arrested looters.

I personally believed that UK police has lack of experience on how to deal with riot. That's why they are so slow to react for the first few days. They haven't experienced anything like this for the past 20-30 years. I think that if the riot took placed in nothern ireland, the local police will definitely contain this chaos in much more effecient way.

However, if we compare UK police and msian police, they looks like the opposite. I believe that msian police definitely have more experience and will deal with this problem in more efficient way. However, the main problem for msian police (and other police in the world) is lack of professionalisme. Some (not all) of the msian police tend to use excessive force (i.e beating), yelling (or disrecpect) etc.

In short, both professionalisme and effective measures are vital for police force in order to maintain peace and tackle chaos effectively.
